Broken Dawn
Book #10 Immortal Guardians
By Dianne Duvall
June 16, 2020

Delve into an exciting new stand-alone novel in New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall's "fast-paced and humorous" (Publishers Weekly), "utterly addictive" (RT Book Reviews) Immortal Guardians series.

Nick Belanger can't stop thinking about the single mother who lives next door. She's smart. She's funny. She's so beautiful he can't stare at her too long for fear his eyes will start to glow. But Kayla thinks he's just an ordinary guy who works in security. Finding out he instead is a powerful immortal warrior who hunts and slays psychotic vampires for a living may not go over well, particularly since she has a daughter she doesn't want to endanger.
Kayla Dorman can keep neither her gaze nor her thoughts from straying to the man next door. Who can blame her really? He is the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome with smart, charming, and honorable thrown in. He's also a few years younger than her and surely would not be interested in a single mom who hasn't dated since her divorce. At least that's what she thinks until an accident nearly takes her life and Nick risks all to save her.
The dynamics of their relationship swiftly change. The friendship they've developed over the years deepens into love as the two spend every minute they can together, laughing and teasing, never suspecting a threat may lurk in the shadows. But that threat soon strikes, making it clear that Nick is the target and his enemy doesn't care if Kayla gets caught in the cross fire. Though Kayla bravely rises to the occasion and is determined to do whatever it takes to help Nick defeat his enemy, Nick is terrified of losing her. Can he identify and eliminate his new nemesis before the man takes everything from him?

1.   Who is your greatest influence when writing your novels?
My greatest influence is Stephen King. I love his writing. Every time I read one of his books, there is always a moment in which I find myself thinking, “No one else would’ve thought to describe that in such a way.” I also really like his book ON WRITING and often recommend it to new writers seeking guidance. In it, King covers areas of writing that my creative writing professors in college never even mentioned.

2.   Let's face it, so many are curious about Darnell: might you expand your Gifted Ones series in the future?
I do plan to expand The Gifted Ones series in the future and have been contemplating adding stories that revolve around gifted ones in the present, not just those in Medieval England. Alternately, I have been toying with the idea of creating a new series that will revolve around both the humans and gifted ones who work for The Network in my Immortal Guardians series. So many readers have asked me to give Chris, Darnell, Sheldon, and Tanner (among others) their own books. I’d love to give Max—Nick’s Second in BROKEN DAWN—his own book, too.

3.  You said you are a pantser writer, but how do you keep everyone's abilities and previous plots straight?
I am indeed a pantser. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, that means I “fly by the seat of my pants” when I write instead of outlining the books beforehand. But I know these characters very well (you should see some of the crazy things they do in my imagination that don’t make it into the books), so I haven’t had any problems keeping up with their abilities thus far. The plots don’t fade from memory either because they are the bones of each story. I DO, however, occasionally have to go back and check the spelling of a secondary or tertiary character’s name or of a place mentioned earlier to ensure I’m remembering it correctly.

4.   If you could have lunch with any author living or dead to gain inspiration, who is your pick?
Stephen King. I tend to be quiet around people I meet for the first time but would nevertheless probably end up talking his ear off and extending that lunch as long as I could. :-)

5.   I have had this question for a long time. Might we ever know who the first female Immortal Guardian is?
I don’t know if we’ll ever learn who the first female Immortal Guardian was, but I’m thinking the eldest female Immortal Guardian currently living will eventually make an appearance in the series . . . and maybe even get her own book. I admit I’ve been wondering about her, where she’s stationed, her history, and more for some time now.

Thanks so much for the fun interview and for helping me celebrate BROKEN DAWN’s release!

  3. OMG! I never would have guessed Stephen King! He's an awesome writer - but usually too scary for me to handle. I'm glad that he's inspired Dianne to write the great stories she pens! I know I can't wait to read Broken Dawn!
